Charity and Its Fruits

← Back to Articles

These six chapters are excerpted from Charity and Its Fruits — a series of sixteen sermons preached by Jonathan Edwards from the pulpit of the Church of Northampton, Connecticut, in the year 1738. They were published posthumously and represent some of the most penetrating and practical writing on the nature of Christian love ever produced. The complete work of 368 pages is reprinted by The Banner of Truth Trust.

Edwards takes his text throughout from 1 Corinthians 13 and works systematically through what charity — that is, Christian love — is, what it produces in the soul, what it prevents, and what awaits those in whom it is perfected in the world to come. The final chapter, Heaven, a World of Love, stands among the most beautiful and searching pages in the whole of Christian literature.
