Many secular scientists believe there is little or no evidence for the global Flood described in the Bible. Yet many of those same scientists readily accept that vast floods once swept across the planet Mars, carving huge channels into its surface. As we shall see, there is plenty of evidence here on earth for a worldwide Flood, just as the Scriptures say.
Sedimentary Rocks
The Grand Canyon is one of many places that showcase evidence for Noah’s Flood. Conventional geologists assign its flat-lying layers ages from about 270 million years at the rim to more than 500 million years near the bottom. Those ages rest largely on the fossils found in each layer, which are themselves dated by the assumption that rock always built up slowly at today’s rates — the idea known as uniformitarian geology.
The Flood model predicts something different: thick layers laid down quickly over vast areas, with little or no erosion between them. That is what the Grand Canyon shows. The Coconino Sandstone near the top of the canyon is hundreds of feet thick in places, and similar sandstone is found far beyond Arizona; creation geologists trace it and its equivalents across several neighboring states, including New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.
Look closely at where one layer meets the next, and there is often a flat, knife-edge contact with little sign of erosion. If millions of years had passed between those layers, we would expect deep gullies, weathered surfaces and soils. Creation scientists point out that at today’s average rate of erosion, the continents would be worn down to sea level in roughly 10 million years — yet these “missing” millions of years left the surfaces almost untouched.
The layers are also remarkably regular and parallel, as if laid down in one continuous sequence. Several of the Grand Canyon’s rock layers belong to great sheets of sediment that stretch across North America and beyond. That is exactly what a worldwide Flood could do. When the evidence of the rocks conflicts with the assumed ages of the fossils, the assumption usually wins. But denying the Flood does not change what can be observed.
The Fossil Record
In a worldwide flood, one would expect to find huge numbers of fossils of many different kinds buried together, including creatures carried far from the places where they lived. That is what the fossil record shows. Creation scientists also note that the great majority of fossils — about 95 percent by their count — are marine creatures, mostly shellfish and other invertebrates, many found far inland and high above sea level.
Fossils do not form slowly. A dead creature decays or is eaten within weeks or months. To become a fossil, it must be buried quickly and sealed away from scavengers and oxygen. Vast fossil beds therefore point to rapid burial on a vast scale. For more on this, see Fossils and the Global Flood.
The Geological Model
A global Flood would leave a deep mark on the earth’s crust. The weight of billions of tons of water and sediment would press the crust down in some places and push it up in others. As the waters drained off the rising continents, the rushing water would carve the land, and layers still soft and wet would bend rather than break.
We see evidence of this today. The shape of the western United States, with the Continental Divide, the Rocky Mountains and the great drainage of the Mississippi River Valley, fits a picture of water draining off a rising continent, west toward the Pacific and east down the slopes of the Rockies. Around the world, rock layers are found bent, folded and tilted. In the Grand Canyon itself, thick layers of sandstone and limestone are folded sharply along the edge of the Kaibab Plateau. Creation geologists have argued that such tight folds without widespread shattering show the layers were still soft when they were bent — which would be impossible if hundreds of millions of years had passed between their deposit and their folding.
The Gene Pool Reveals the Flood
If the whole human race descends from Noah’s family, we would expect to see the mark of that in our genes. The Bible tells us that every man on earth descends from Noah through his three sons, while the women descend from the wives in Noah’s family, and all of them ultimately from Eve.
Two parts of our DNA are especially useful for tracing family lines. Mitochondrial DNA is passed down almost entirely from mother to child, so it follows the mother’s line. The Y chromosome is passed only from father to son, so it follows the father’s line. If the Flood happened, the men of the world should show a sharp narrowing, or “bottleneck,” in the father’s line, because every man would trace back to one man, Noah.
In 2015 a large international team published a study in the journal Genome Research that found exactly such a pattern: a strong bottleneck in the diversity of the human Y chromosome within the last ten thousand years, one that does not show up in the mitochondrial (mother’s line) DNA. The authors, who do not believe in the Flood, explained it as a result of changes in culture and society. But a sudden narrowing of men’s family lines in recent history is just what Genesis would lead us to expect. For more, see Modern Genetics Confirms We All Came from Noah.
No single study can prove the Flood on its own. But the rocks, the fossils, the shape of the land and our own genes all tell the same story, and it is the story God has given us in His Word.
Conclusion
Thick, widespread rock layers with little erosion between them, vast fossil graveyards, folded strata, a landscape shaped by draining water and a recent narrowing of the human family line all fit the Bible’s account of a worldwide Flood. The Lord Jesus Christ Himself spoke of the Flood as real history and warned that His return would come just as suddenly.
