What Happened
From Friday, August 28 through Sunday, August 30, 2026, the Baird Center in downtown Milwaukee hosted the "Eternal Happiness" International Convention of Jehovah's Witnesses, one of only two U.S. cities selected this year to host this special tier of gathering — a step above the more common regional conventions held in dozens of other cities this same season. Convention spokesman Tyrell Whiting put attendance at more than 21,000, including some 5,000 international delegates from 20 countries; Visit Milwaukee's own figures ran slightly higher, at over 23,000 total attendees. It was Milwaukee's first time hosting an international convention of this scale since 1978. The city felt it: an estimated 30,000 hotel-room nights were booked across more than 25 area hotels, and several downtown roads were closed from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. each day of the event.
The Witnesses themselves treated the Baird Center, for those three days, as consecrated space. Whiting told Wisconsin Public Radio that volunteers viewed the arena "as a place of worship while we are here," and made a point of leaving the facility in better condition than they found it. Admission was free throughout, with no collection taken — a practice the organization publicizes consistently and which, so far as it goes, is a genuine point in its favor.
The Program Itself
This year's global theme, "Eternal Happiness," ran across every session. Friday's chairman's address asked, "Abundant Happiness Forever — Is It Realistic?", drawing on Psalm 16:11 and Psalm 100:2. Saturday's program worked through Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, built around Matthew 5:3, and Sunday closed with a talk titled "Have You Discovered the Treasure?" Each day also featured an installment of a scripted Bible drama series, "The Good News According to Jesus," dramatizing Gospel events from Matthew, Mark, and Luke. By the organization's own count, roughly 9.2 million Jehovah's Witnesses exist worldwide, with about 1.25 million of them in the United States — a following larger than many mainline Protestant denominations, gathered this particular weekend around a message that, on its face, sounds thoroughly biblical.
What Is Actually Being Taught
That is exactly where care is needed. The Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, which produces the convention program, its own Bible translation, and virtually all doctrinal material its members study, denies the deity of Jesus Christ — teaching instead that he is a created being, the archangel Michael, brought into existence by Jehovah before anything else was made. It denies the Trinity outright as a pagan doctrine. It denies the personhood of the Holy Spirit, treating Him as an impersonal active force rather than the third Person of the Godhead. And its own translation of Scripture, the New World Translation, alters the text at exactly the points where these denials would otherwise be most exposed — John 1:1 rendered "the Word was a god" rather than "the Word was God" being the best-known example.
None of this is incidental to an otherwise sound organization. It is the very reason a Witness reader is told to distrust his own church history, his own creeds, and ultimately his own plain reading of John's Gospel unless it has first been filtered through Watch Tower publications. A movement can hold sincere, sacrificial people — and by every account this convention was full of them — while still resting on a Christ who cannot save, because he is not the Christ Scripture actually presents.
A Call to the Watchtower Reader
If you attended this convention, or know someone who did, the appeal here is not to doubt the sincerity you saw or the warmth of the fellowship. It is to test what was taught against the very Book it claims as its foundation, without the New World Translation standing between you and the text. It is whether the Jesus they gathered to honor is the same Jesus who rose from the dead on the third day, and who alone is "the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6).
