A Spacecraft Racing to the Edge of the Solar System

In January 2006, NASA launched the New Horizons spacecraft — a probe about the size of a baby grand piano — toward Pluto, at the highest launch speed of any spacecraft ever sent from Earth, roughly 15 kilometers per second. Even at that speed, the journey took nine and a half years. New Horizons made its closest approach to Pluto on July 14, 2015, and what its instruments found did not match what a solar system supposedly 4.6 billion years old should look like.

A Century of Revising Pluto Downward

Pluto’s own discovery story is worth knowing before its age is discussed. Percival Lowell, the astronomer whose observatory in Arizona still bears his name, spent the last years of his life searching for a predicted “Planet X” based on what he took to be irregularities in the orbits of Uranus and Neptune. He estimated its mass at some six times that of Earth. Lowell died in 1916 without finding it. Clyde Tombaugh finally photographed Pluto in 1930, searching in the region of sky Lowell had predicted — a discovery now understood to have been something of a coincidence, since the irregularities Lowell relied on turned out not to be real, and Pluto’s actual mass is far too small to have produced them in the first place.

That mass has been revised downward repeatedly as better instruments came online: from Lowell’s estimate of six Earth masses, down to roughly three-quarters of Earth’s size shortly after discovery, and by 1978 down again to only about 1/500th of Earth’s mass — a small icy world, not the planet-sized body first imagined. That history of repeated downward revision is itself worth remembering when the same scientific establishment offers a single confident number for Pluto’s age.

What New Horizons Actually Found

Pluto’s atmosphere — a thin mix of nitrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide — had been expected to disappear. A widely used astronomy textbook revised in 1998 predicted that as Pluto moved further from the sun following its 1989 closest approach, its atmosphere would grow so cold and thin that it would likely be gone within about twenty years, leaving a uniformly white, frozen surface. New Horizons arrived seventeen years into that prediction. The atmosphere was still there, still losing an estimated 500 tons of nitrogen per hour to space, and the surface was still multicolored rather than bleached white as expected.

The geology was, if anything, more surprising. New Horizons photographed water-ice mountains up to 11,000 feet tall — comparable to the Rockies — in a body far too small and far too cold, by conventional reckoning, to still be generating the internal heat needed to build mountains. Alan Stern, the mission’s principal investigator, called the discovery “a ‘balloon popping’ event” and remarked that the solar system had saved its best for last. Large regions of Pluto, especially the bright, heart-shaped plain now called Sputnik Planum, showed no impact craters whatsoever — a body that has been sitting in the debris-filled outer solar system for billions of years should be pockmarked like Earth’s own moon. Jeff Moore of the mission’s geology team called it “one of the youngest surfaces we’ve ever seen in the solar system,” and deputy project scientist Cathy Olkin said the findings “far exceeds what we came for.” A 2016 study published in PLOS ONE by astronomer David Trilling calculated, using the known rate of small-object impacts in that part of the solar system, that Sputnik Planum’s crater-free surface must be less than ten million years old — and several of the New Horizons team estimated the youngest surfaces at under a hundred million years, itself only about one forty-fifth of the claimed 4.5-billion-year age of the solar system.

The Moons Defy the Textbook Too

Pluto is not alone in this. Its largest moon, Charon, is roughly half Pluto’s own size, and four much smaller moons — Nix, Hydra, Kerberos, and Styx — orbit further out. Over billions of years, moons are expected to become tidally locked to their parent body, always showing the same face, the way Earth’s own moon does. New Horizons found the opposite among Pluto’s small moons. Kerberos completes a rotation every 5.33 hours; Hydra spins once every twenty-six minutes, completing roughly 89 rotations in a single orbit around Pluto. Nix is tipped 132 degrees off its expected axis and rotates backward relative to its orbital motion — the kind of arrangement the standard model of a slowly spinning, flattening dust cloud does not predict, since the conservation of angular momentum should have left the whole system rotating in a consistent plane and direction, much as Newton’s laws would require if nothing had disturbed it. Several of the moons are still visibly precessing — wobbling on their axis the way a spinning top wobbles right after it is spun, before settling into a smooth, stable spin. A system that had been turning for 4.6 billion years should have settled down long, long ago.

Not an Isolated Case

Pluto is only the latest surprise of this kind. When the Galileo spacecraft imaged Jupiter’s moon Io, it found roughly 80 active volcanoes on a body that, by conventional reckoning, should also be old, cold, and geologically dead. Even running at a tenth of their observed rate, those volcanoes would have erupted Io’s entire volume more than forty times over across 4.6 billion years — a physical impossibility for a moon that still has any volume left at all. The pattern repeats almost everywhere a probe is sent: a body expected to be ancient and inert turns out, on direct observation, to be young and active.

The Mark of a False Worldview Is Inconsistency

Richard Fangrad of Creation Ministries International, discussing these findings, made a point worth sitting with: science properly speaking deals with what can be observed in the present — we have microscopes and telescopes, not what he called “past-scopes.” No one disputes what New Horizons actually photographed and measured; the disagreement is over how to interpret a past no one was present to observe, and that interpretation depends entirely on the worldview brought to the data. A worldview built on millions of years without a Creator must explain every one of these findings as some new, unanticipated exception. A worldview built on a recent creation and a global Flood does not need the exceptions in the first place — a genuinely young solar system, only thousands rather than billions of years old, is expected to still show internal heat, active geology, and moons that have not yet finished settling into their final motion. The evidence did not surprise the creationist model. It surprised the model that predicted a dead planet.

A Debate from Years Ago

The webmaster of this site once debated a German scientist, an atheist, on the age of the solar system. He argued that a young solar system would leave people with less to discover — that an old, worn-down universe was the more interesting one. The opposite was argued back to him: a young, recently created solar system would still be active, still unsettled, with far more happening in it than a system that had already run down over billions of years. He was told, specifically, that a probe sent to Pluto would find a more active world than the 4.6-billion-year model allowed for. When New Horizons arrived and NASA’s own scientists expressed surprise at how young Pluto looked, that was not a lucky guess. It followed directly from what Scripture already teaches about a recent creation — and it is exactly what happened.

What the Bible Says

Scripture does not present the universe as ancient and winding down toward exhaustion; it presents it as the direct, recent handiwork of a speaking God. “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1), completed within six days and explicitly tied to the pattern of the human work week: “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is” (Exodus 20:11). Paul tells the Romans that the created order itself leaves men without excuse: “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead” (Romans 1:20). And Peter, describing the very posture that dismisses these findings as coincidence, warned of scoffers “willingly… ignorant” that the world was once formed by God’s word and once destroyed by a flood of water (2 Peter 3:3–6) — the same global Flood that a young, still-unsettled solar system is entirely consistent with.

A Call to Consider the Evidence

None of this is offered to score a point against NASA’s scientists, many of whom simply followed the data honestly to a conclusion their own working assumptions did not predict. It is offered because a pattern of constant, mounting exceptions is itself informative. When a model must be rescued again and again — Pluto’s mass revised down by orders of magnitude, its predicted dead atmosphere still very much present, its moons still spinning as though recently wound up — the more reasonable conclusion is not that the universe keeps behaving strangely. It is that the model was wrong to begin with. “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible… and by him all things consist” (Colossians 1:16–17). The same Christ who spoke the solar system into being at a word is the one every soul will one day meet as Judge or Redeemer — and the evidence He has left scattered across His own creation, down to the mountains of a small, distant, unexpectedly young world, is still pointing where it always has: to Him.
